Definitely the Food of Love

Fiance and I are very musical people. He's a singer-songwriter trying to make it big when not working his 9-5, and I have 3 years of piano instruction, 5 years of dance, 6-7 years of voice, 9 years of clarinet, and nowhere to perform. Before we even started dating, he was serenading me digitally, and when he proposed, it was to one of our favorite songs (this is a much cooler story than you might assume). So when I say that picking music for the wedding is important, try to believe me.

First, wedding bands are a huuuuuuge no-no. We like songs, and when we hear them, we want to be able to sing along and know where the dance breaks will be. We want to harmonize. We want them to be in the proper key. And by the way, Madonna songs are performed by Madonna.

The DJ was an easy choice. We'd seen him at a wedding in Reading (yes, I know I'm a poet), and absolutely loved his set, so it was definitely worth a small travel fee to bring him to Philly. He's also amazingly affordable!

Cocktail hour and ceremony music proved to be another ball of wax, as they say. Unlike the dance music situation, "canned" music was deemed to be totally unacceptable, so we were in search of real live music-making people. At first, we were looking for a jazz trio or jazz combo of some sort to play funky tunes (standards are not really our style), but the guys we found weren't really doing anything special for us. Eventually fiance had the idea to hire some of the local talent we're getting to know and love and have them play some originals during cocktail hour. We were also investigating getting an organist to play the ceremony, since our venue has the biggest pipe organ in an American residence. But when we thought of having a solo cellist play the ceremony music, it was a done deal.

While the exact details have yet to be nailed down regarding the local act and the cellist, it seems certain that our love will be well fed.

How important is music to you?
